Topsail Island, NC to New Bern, NC - 97.6 Miles

I must be crazy - I cycled 100.0 miles today.

The trip odometer shows 100.0

Mary and Chanda arrived at the hotel at the same time as Suzanne and I.

The total ride from hotel to hotel was 97.6 miles, but Suzanne, Mary, Chanda and I rode circles in the parking lot to get to the 100 mile mark - we did a century ride.  Therefore, call me crazy to keep riding the extra 2.4 miles.

Other riders were determined to do a 100 miles, I'm not sure what they did to get in the extra mileage.

The daily stats:  7 hours and 40 minutes ride time (crazy); max speed 21.6 MPH; average speed 13 MPH; and total mileage 100.0 (crazy).

We got off to an early start, breakfast at 6:30 and on the road by 7:00

Breakfast for me - oatmeal and coffee.  I could have had eggs and sausage, donuts and yogurt.

Of course, I made a peanut butter sandwich and gorp for the road.

Todays route was a mix of state highways, country roads and the dreaded US Highway 17. Not many places to stop for food.

US 17 - 4 lanes, may or may not have a shoulder to ride on, cars and trucks roaring by.  Fortunately, we only had a tad more than 5 miles on this road today.

Some of the state roads and county roads we were on had plenty of traffic too but not like 17.

The red line marks today's route. The shortest distance is 68 miles but that would be on US 17 the whole way.

I rode the first 30 miles with Fran and Valerie, and the last 70 miles with Suzanne.

I had a Fat Tire Beer when I finished!
Dinner

Pasta salads - with spinach, snap peas, carrots; green salad; dinner rolls;  chicken; and cheese cake for dessert.

Tomorrow 73 miles!

I'm tired now!
